Shimano Brings High-Performance Spinning Reel Innovations To Everyday Anglers With New Saros Series
IRVINE, Calif. 7/07 - ICAST Show Intro -- For everyday anglers looking for high performance in a spinning reel, Shimano offers the new Saros series featuring the innovative Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement and Propulsion Line Management System. These front-drag reels are available in four models - the SAR-1000F, 2500F, 3000F and 4000F, providing sizes for anything from ultra-light action with 2-pound test, to light tackle inshore saltwater situations.
Also being offered in the new top-of-the-line Stella FD reels, the Saros series “takes spinning reel performance to the next level with the use of our Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement and Propulsion Line Management System,” said Shimano’s reel product manager Jeremy Sweet. “With these features, we’re able to improve gear durability, line management and casting performance so that anglers will have a more enjoyable on-the-water experience when using spinning tackle.”
Relying on its industry-leading cold-forging manufacturing capabilities, Shimano’s Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement uses a special cold forged aluminum drive gear and a hardened brass pinion gear. “Cold-forging combines the ability to make gears with less metal for reduced weight, while still being stronger and more durable than even an all stainless steel drivetrain,” Sweet said. “With the Paladin gear system, anglers will appreciate the out-of-the-box smoothness after years of use.”
Line twist has always been an inherent problem with spinning reels, along with the occasional backlash and wind knot that is caused by line being loosely packed onto the spool. “While anglers have come to just expect these problems, we address them with the new Propulsion Line Management System,“ Sweet notes.
A five-component system, Shimano’s Propulsion feature includes a spool lip design to prevent backlashes and wind knots from forming. Line also flows off the spool in smaller loops meaning less line slap on the stripper guide, which when combined with the long stroke spool design, provides longer casting distance due to less friction. “The unique shape of the spool and the spool lip design combine to keep the line from bouncing, on the spool lip or stripper guide and provide a consistent light friction on the line to reduce line twist and backlashes.”
The Propulsion Line Management System also includes Shimano’s SR-Concept one-piece bail wire to reduce friction and tangles, a twist-reducing Power Roller III line roller, a bail trip mechanism that easily trips the bail by turning the handle, and Shimano’s S-Arm Cam. “This final component keeps the line in contact with the line roller during slack line fishing such as vertical jigging and drop-shotting,” said Sweet.
Along with features addressing gear durability, line management and casting performance, Shimano also offers other innovations in the Saros spinning reels including the Direct Drive Mechanism (a thread-in handle to eliminate backplay), a Maintenance Port for easy lubrication, five shielded A-RB (anti-rust) bearings for corrosion resistance and contaminant protection, Super Stopper II anti-reverse with a one-way roller bearing and Waterproof Drags. All four reels have an aluminum frame and spool, and a graphite sideplate and rotor.
For ultra light fishing, the Saros 1000F has a 1000 size spool on a 750 size body. It features a 5.6:1 gear ratio, and can handle from 270 yards of 2-pound test line, up to 110 yards of 6-pound. Each with 6.0:1 gear ratios, the Saros 2500F can handle from 200 yards of 6-pound test and up to 120 yards of 10, while the 3000F can hold 230 yards of 6 and up to 140 yard 10. The Saros 4000F has a 5.7:1 gear ratio and the spool capacity to handle from 240 yards of 8-pound test up to 160 yards of 12.
“With the new Saros spinning reel series, anglers can expect the Shimano quality and performance that we stake our reputation on,” Sweet states. “At Shimano, with the technology and features we built into Saros, we expect them to become one of our most popular series of reels.”
