IRVINE, Calif. - Mid-Year ’07 Intro --With a unique counter-balances handle shank to virtually eliminate any wobble on the retrieve, Shimano expands its Torium saltwater reel series with the new Torium 14. As with the larger Torium (TOR) reels, the TOR14 provides the speed, power and durability needed for a large range of saltwater fishing applications.
Cranking power and high-speed line retrieval - 36-inches of line retrieved per crank with a 6.2:1 gear ratio - comes from the use of Shimano’s High Efficiency Gearing (HEG). This special gearing where the gearbox and sideplate are stamped into a complete unit provides the torque needed for anglers to move fish quickly. “Turning a fish to keep it out of rocks when bottom fishing, or to rip in line fast when after kingfish, the HEG gears will handle the need,” said Jeremy Sweet, fishing reel product manager for Shimano.
“This gearing technology is unmatched in the fishing tackle industry, and it’s all due to Shimano’s cold-forging capabilities,” Sweet said. “Shimano perfected this expertise in its bicycle component division, and bought it to the fishing tackle division when developing the Tiagra, Torsa, Trinidad and Calcutta reels.”
As with the other Torium reels, the TOR-14 features Shimano's specially treated A-RB (anti-rust) bearings that add at least 10 times more corrosion resistance than standard bearing, notes Sweet. Other construction features include a diecast aluminum frame for tight tolerances and durability, a stamped aluminum right sideplate to keep gears in precise alignment, and a left sideplate that combines the lightweight of graphite with the structural integrity of aluminum. Additional features include Shimano’s Super Stopper with Assist Stopper anti-reverse for no handle backplay – with a one-way A-RB roller bearing, an oversized clicker button, and an oversized cast control knob for easy adjustment.
The Torium 14 handles 300 yards of 14-pound test line, and up to 200 yards of 20-pound. It weighs 15.7-ounces, and has a maximum drag of 13 pounds.
